Susan Anderson, LPC

Susan Anderson, LPC, holds an MA in
Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute
where she is currently pursuing her PhD in the same
field. Susan was drawn to Pacifica because of its
interdisciplinary focus on literature, mythology,
religion, and culture that accompanies the more
traditional theoretical and clinical foundation. As a
result, she brings a unique perspective to her practice
and a deep reservoir upon which she can draw in her work
with clients. Susan believes that everyone, either
consciously or unconsciously, is on a journey of
self-discovery. In her work with clients, she
facilitates that journey, helping them uncover their
authentic selves. In Jungian fashion, she encourages
clients to explore their dreams and their unconscious
and supports them as their path shifts to one of
self-recovery. She specializes in individual work with
adolescents and adults.

Joel Givens, MA, LPC

Joel has a Master's Degree in
Psychology from Duquesne University and just recently
started working at MDS Counseling Center. Joel believes
that we develop our sense of self and our relationships
with others in the context of stories that we tell
others about ourselves and stories that others tell
about us. Sometimes these stories speak failures,
shortcomings, and weaknesses and omit strengths and
accomplishments. Joel practices narrative therapy to
work within the dominant stories and to develop new
stories that speak strengths, restored relationships,
and new ways of seeing ourselves. Joel uses a
combination of narrative therapy, psychodynamic therapy,
cognitive-behavioral therapy, and Dialectical Behavior
Therapy (DBT). Joel works with adolescents, individual
adults, couples and families. Joel specializes in
anxiety, depression, personality disorders,
interpersonal effectiveness, grief and loss, gay and
