Malpractice Insurance Requirements for
Internship at MDS
Every student intern must carry an individual student
Professional Liability Policy in the amount of
$1,000,000 each incident/ $3,000,000 annual aggregate.
Policies can be easily purchased through your
professional organization.
American Counseling Association - ACA
ACA Insurance Trust, Inc. (ACAIT) - ACAIT
is an independent corporation promoting and
administering quality insurance coverages and services
at competitive rates for ACA members and students.

The ACA Insurance Trust, Inc. (ACAIT) has
partnered with Healthcare Providers Service
Organization (HPSO)
to offer a
professional liability insurance that provides broad
coverage, whether you work with families, individuals,
or in difficult areas, such as counseling sex offenders.
You can purchase Student Professional Liability
Insurance, typically for about $29 through HPSO.
Applications are available at:

All graduate student interns at MDS, including those
pursuing degrees in Counseling Psychology, Clinical
Psychology, Social Work, Transpersonal Counseling
Psychology, as well as Ph.D.’s or Psy.D.’s are eligible
to purchase a policy through HPSO.
American Psychological Association – APA
If you are a member of the American Psychological
Association, you can purchase Student Professional
Liability Insurance through the APA Insurance Trust for
$35. Membership & Liability Insurance information is
available at:

This program is available only for graduate students
in psychology.
National Association of Social Workers – NASW
If you are a member of NASW, you can purchase Student
Professional Liability Insurance through the NASW
Insurance Trust for $35. Student membership fees are $40
if you have not yet become a member.

Chicago Insurance Company
If you are not a member of a professional
organization, you can purchase insurance through Marsh
Affinity Group Services, which uses the Chicago
Insurance Company to underwrite their program. Student
policies are approximately $35.
