Pride Month: Mental Health Care Is a Human Right

Every June, Pride Month invites us to celebrate the resilience, courage, and contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities. It is a time of joy, visibility, and affirmation. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the work that remains to ensure that every person, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, has access to safe, affirming, and high-quality mental health care.

At Maria Droste Counseling Center (MDCC), we believe that mental health care is a fundamental human right. Yet for many LGBTQIA+ individuals, access to that care remains complicated by stigma, discrimination, financial barriers, and a healthcare system that is not always welcoming or affirming. The mental health disparities experienced by LGBTQIA+ communities are significant and well-documented. Research consistently shows that LGBTQIA+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use disorders, and suicidal ideation compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. LGBTQIA+ youth, in particular, face elevated risks of loneliness, bullying, family rejection, and mental health challenges that can have lifelong consequences.

Importantly, these disparities are not the result of LGBTQIA+ identities themselves. They are the predictable outcome of living in a society where discrimination, exclusion, and fear remain daily realities for many people. When individuals are denied acceptance, safety, or the freedom to be fully themselves, mental health suffers.

The good news is that affirming environments make a profound difference. Studies consistently show that LGBTQIA+ individuals who experience acceptance, community connection, and access to affirming mental health care have significantly better outcomes. Supportive families, inclusive workplaces, welcoming schools, and culturally competent healthcare providers can be life-changing – and in some cases, life-saving.

This understanding is at the heart of our mission at Maria Droste. As a nonprofit mental health organization committed to serving our community regardless of ability to pay, we recognize that access alone is not enough. Care must also be affirming, inclusive, and culturally responsive. People deserve to enter a counseling office knowing they will be respected, understood, and welcomed exactly as they are.

That is why we are committed not only to providing quality care, but also to expanding our reach into LGBTQIA+ communities throughout Colorado. We are actively exploring new partnerships, outreach opportunities, and community connections that will help us better serve queer individuals and families who may not yet know that affordable, affirming mental health care is available to them. Our vision is simple: a community where no one delays seeking help because they fear judgment, cannot afford care, or wonder whether they will be accepted.

As we celebrate Pride Month, we honor the advocates, activists, clinicians, families, and community members who continue working toward a more equitable future. We celebrate the courage of LGBTQIA+ individuals who show up authentically every day. And we recommit ourselves to building a mental health system where every person feels seen, valued, and supported.

I dream of a world where LGBTQIA+ individuals can move through their lives with the certainty that they belong – not despite who they are, but because of who they are. A world where affirming spaces are not exceptional, but expected. A world where mental health care is accessible, compassionate, and available to everyone. At Maria Droste Counseling Center, we are proud to be part of that work.

This Pride Month, and every month, we stand alongside LGBTQIA+ communities in support, solidarity, and hope!
